When a kid from the right side of the tracks veers left, how does he find his way back?

They say time dulls pain. Asher’s not buying it. Instead, he’s burying his grief with weed and booze after losing his family because of the Street Wars.

Unfortunately, his petty crimes have caught up with him. Asher understands if he gets out of this, he needs to do some serious soul-searching. He has to come to grips with his losses. Because if he stays on this path, it leads directly to jail.

Set in the world of The Alliance Chronicles, Release is Asher Jones’ poignant coming of age novella about how a good kid finds himself in the midst of a war.

Cut Scene from the second draft of Release: the Alliance Chronicles Novella

“Now you know all about me,” I say to Ko.

She squeezes my hand. “Is that everything, Asher?”

“Yeah. Well, actually, I have a confession as well.”

“About?”

“Griffin,” I say, my voice cracking.

“I kind of figured something was going on between you two. Tell me.”

“He followed us to Riza. I was kind of shocked when he joined. We didn’t see each other again, until the day he lost his family.”

“What happened?”

“I was second in command the day Griffin decided to disobey orders. He was supposed to report to duty, but he wouldn’t come because his wife was pregnant and sick.”

“You outranked Griffin?”

“Yeah. I was still in the vehicle when a squad member came to find me.” My throat thickens with the memory. Every time I relive the events, I imagine doing something, anything, to change the outcome. Griffin didn’t deserve what happened to his wife and kid. My voice cracks as I continue, “My Commanding Officer instructed that we had to bring him, no excuses. I gave the order to do whatever was needed to bring Griffin in.”

Ko’s jaw drops.

“Trust me. I regretted the words as soon as they left my mouth. I heard the gunfire and ran inside the house. Gena Carter lay on the floor. A pool of blood surrounded her small frame.”

Her expression blanches. “So you were there. You didn’t see who shot her?”

“It doesn’t matter who shot her. Griffin took a swing at me when he came into the room and found Gena. My squad pulled him off me and tossed him into lockup. I don’t know if he realizes I’m responsible for his pain.”

“What makes you think you caused his pain? You followed orders. If anything your C.O. is the responsible one.” She rubs my arm.

“I may not have pulled the trigger, but I gave the order.” I stare at the floor. “Makes me responsible.”

Ko scoots closer. “No. You’re guilty of making some poor choices in your life, but it was the people in your life who messed up. When’s the last time you spoke to your grandparents?”

I lift my head. “The day I tried to get them to sign the papers. Losing Shiloh and my parents changed his opinion about the military.”

Ko’s voice takes on a certain harshness. “He didn’t have to agree with your joining. You needed his support.”

“Agreed.” Unsaid words dance on my tongue. I bite them back. I don’t want to discuss my grandparents even after all this time.

Slowly, Ko shakes her head. “I don’t agree with why you joined. Revenge? Was that your real reason?”

“Yeah,” I mutter.

“Did you accomplish your mission?”

“No.”

“So was it worth joining Riza?” She challenges.

A smile tugs at my lips. “Without a doubt. I’ve learned a lot, and I joined the Alliance.”

“How does that play into wanting revenge for your family’s deaths?”

“The military failed Shiloh. If Riza fails, his death is avenged. I want to be part of bringing it down.”

Ko sighs heavily. “What about your parents?”

“The government failed them. So—”

“No, you’re wrong. Your neighbors killed them, not the government. Asher, you have to get over this need for vengeance.”

I glance at her. It’s easy to judge someone’s actions when you’ve never walked in their shoes. “You can say that because you haven’t lost anyone.”

“You’re right. I haven’t lost anyone, and I’m trying not to lose you.” She faces me. “Keep this up and you’ll end up alongside your family. That would be a waste.”

“I haven’t scared you off with my history?”

“No. You haven’t.” She intertwines her fingers with mine. “Your history explains some things for me.”

“Like?”

“It’s obvious there’s something going on between you and Griffin. Now I know why he’s ready to kill you. Most likely he’s put the puzzle together.”

“You’re probably right about that. What else?”

“You never got over Cindy.”

It’s not a question. “She’ll always have a part of my heart.”

She purses her lips. “You don’t understand. You never said good-bye to her. Cindy has a part of your heart because you never found closure.”

I withdraw my hand. “You’re wrong.”

“Okay. Answer one question for me. Do you love me?”

Ko would ask the one question I’m unsure of. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for that girl. But love? Bad things happened to the people I loved. “I care about you. A lot.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

I rake my hand through my hair. “Isn’t it enough?”

“No.”

“Ko… Cindy was the only girl I ever said those words to, and look what happened.”

“That was one time. Besides, she didn’t walk away from you. The Virus killed her. I’m not going anywhere.”

I exhale. “Can’t you just accept that I care about you? I don’t want to imagine a day without you in it. What hurts you, hurts me.”

I didn’t intend it, but I was hurting her. My inability to say three little words would push her away, something I don’t want.

“Ko, I don’t want to lose the chance for happiness with you.”

She lowers her head. “You don’t know me, Asher. How can I make you happy?”

“How do you know you won’t make me happy?”

She stares at the floor. “Ash—”

“I’m not asking you to walk down the aisle or anything, but I do want you in my life. My grandmother in New Mexico wants me to come out for a visit, maybe make it my home. Come with me.”

“I can’t.”

“What’s keeping you here? Riza? They were going to discharge you.”

Her watery, dark eyes meet mine. “You knew?”

“Of course I knew. I got the doctors to fill me in while we were at the hospital. Your shoulder sustained nerve damage. It may or may not recover. They wanted to discharge you, but I said I was your C.O. and requested a medical leave instead.”

Ko’s eyes turn cold. “You did what?”

Her turbulent tone trembles my body. “I did what was best for you. If you want to go back when you’re fully healed, you can.”

“You didn’t have the right to interfere in my life,” she hisses.

“I wanted you to have options in your life. The doctors—”

“Told me about the leave. I asked for the discharge.”

“You asked?” I do a double take. “Why?”

She drops her head. “Because I don’t want to go back. I can’t handle the idea of being shot again. I suck at being a soldier. Okay? But my leaving is my decision, not yours.”

I nod. “Fine. I screwed up. I’m sorry. Can I ask you something?”

“What?”

My breath catches in my chest. I need to know what Ko’s feelings are. “Do you love me?”

Ko gazes at me. “I…I don’t know. I care, but I don’t want to compete with a memory.”

“You’re not—”

“I would be. I’m sorry you lost Cindy, but I can’t take her place.”

I stand up, ready to leave the room. She doesn’t want to be with me. I had it all wrong. “Ko, I won’t beg you. I’ve laid it all out for you. What more can I say?”

Ko wraps her arms around my waist. She places her cheek against my back. “There’s nothing you can say, Ash.”

I face her. “So, that’s it? We’re done?”

“No.” She cups my cheek. “That’s not what I’m saying.”

Hell, I’d take my chances. This girl is worth it. I lean in and press my mouth to hers. It isn’t our first kiss, and I hope to God it won’t be our last. Before I go too far, I drag my lips from hers.

She stares into my eyes. “Ash, do me a favor and wrap things up properly. Go say good-bye to Cindy. I’ll go with you if you want. We can’t leave here until you do.”

My heart thumps. Is she giving me a chance? “We? You’ll go to New Mexico with me?”

“Yes. I’m willing to try, if you are.”

“Are you sure you’re up to it?” I ask.

Her eyebrows squish together. “I think I’m okay to travel, but I do agree with Zared. I should work on my fighting skills.”

“What? Wait… you heard us?”

Ko grins. “Of course, I heard you. Did you honestly think I’ve been sleeping the entire trip?”

Actually, I did. I pull her close. “So we’re doing this? You and me?”

“Yes.”

Maybe misery has finally run its course in my life. I now have something worthwhile to look forward to, and I’m not letting her go.

LIFT 4 Autism Online Auction: Monday, April 24 – Friday, April 28

Autism.
A mystery to some. A way of life for others. A cause for all since it is now the fastest growing and most common disability in the US. 1 in every 68 children are diagnosed with Autism. Many of these kids will rely on their parents to some degree, depending on severity, all their lives, with estimated costs between 5 to 7 million dollars in services and care over their lifetime. Many of the services those living with Autism require are not covered by insurance. It is an expensive and difficult lifelong diagnosis to navigate.
Authors Ginger Scott and Kennedy Ryan started LIFT 4 Autism a few years ago as a charitable initiative rallying the romance reading community in April, which is Autism Awareness/Acceptance month. All proceeds go to this year’s charitable partner Kulture City, who is doing amazing things for Autism families. Discover more about them at kulturecity.org. Specifically, LIFT will benefit Kulture City’s lifeBOKS program, which provides families with free kits to curtail wandering, a common and potentially life threatening challenge. Proceeds will also benefit Kulture City’s tablet program, which provides iPads to improve communication for non and limited verbal children on the spectrum to families who cannot afford them.

News:Paperback of In Her Eyes

I’m working on edits for the release of In Her Eyes in paperback. I’m aiming to hit publish by the end of the month. At the moment I have two chapters of edits left but am in need of  a Beta reader for input on the flow of the story. There’s a spot that has me stuck and unsatisfied with the scene and dialogue. It’s been revamped form the original in order to be more YA friendly but changing others scenes has left this scene feeling off somehow. Kyler was the original “villain” of sorts, the one who scared Ari with his overpowering Alpha male attitude. But when Ari’s backstory came about her stepbrother, Andre became the main villain who has made Ari into the scared yet independence seeking girl she is today. However, after a few friends read it and suggested toning down Kyler’s strong personalty,so we wouldn’t give younger girls the notion that being treated in such a way was healthy. It was toeing the line between acceptable and aggressive behavior, closer to the line of verbal/mental abuse for comfort. So now I have Ari running scared from both boys and fearing their wrath for doing so but her fear of Kyler is irrational because he hasn’t shown her a reason to fear him yet in her head every guy is to be feared. So,I’m warring with leaving the scene as is and leaving the reader to realize her reaction is irrational on purpose,it’s part of her brokenness from what Andre put her through that leaves her paranoid or I can try tone down her fear of Kyler and just have her afraid of him being upset, hurt and not wanting her because she didn’t trust him.

So yeah that’s where I’m at tonight. And I don’t thing I’m gonna get pass this crossroad tonight,or should I say more like an impasse.C’est la via!Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000026_00006]
